Fueling Four Hungry Boys: This Week’s Protein-Packed Breakfast Haul

Another Week, Another Mission to Feed This Crew

If you’ve been following along here for a while, you already know that feeding four boys in Connecticut is basically a part-time job. Between school days, weekend sports, youth group, and whatever backyard project someone has dreamed up, my guys are constantly burning through energy — and they need real fuel to keep up with it all. This week’s grocery haul was a focused one. I wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. I was trying to make sure breakfast runs smoothly every single morning without stress, without complaint, and without me standing at the stove for an hour before 7 AM.

Let me walk you through exactly what came home this week and why I made each pick.

What I Grabbed and Why

First into the cart were two boxes of Kodiak Protein-Packed Power Waffles — one Blueberry and one Chocolate Chip. I’ve been buying Kodiak products on and off for a couple of years now, and they consistently earn their spot in this kitchen. Each waffle delivers solid protein from whole grains and milk protein, which means my boys aren’t crashing an hour after breakfast. The blueberry flavor goes over really well with my younger two, and honestly, the chocolate chip box rarely survives a full week with teenagers in the house. I grabbed both flavors intentionally this time because I’ve got a specific recipe planned for each — more on that in a minute.

Next up, I picked up two dozen eggs from The Farmer’s Cow — one dozen extra-large and one dozen large, both cage-free brown eggs. I love supporting The Farmer’s Cow because they’re a Connecticut-based operation, and there’s something that feels right about buying eggs that were laid not too far from where we’re sitting down to eat them. Cage-free matters to our family. It’s a small choice, but it’s one I can make consistently at the grocery store, and I appreciate that it’s right there on the shelves at a reasonable price.

I also grabbed a two-pound bag of Banquet Brown ‘N Serve Original Sausage Patties. Now, I know some of you might raise an eyebrow at a pre-made sausage product on a healthy family cooking blog, and I get it. But here’s my honest take: this is a busy family of six, and convenience protein that cooks in minutes is a real asset on a Tuesday morning when we’re all trying to get out the door. Brown ‘N Serve patties heat up fast, the boys eat them without negotiation, and they pair beautifully with eggs and waffles. Practical wins around here too.

Finally, I picked up a bag of Old Tyme 647 Plain Bagels. These have become a staple in our house. The 647 line is lower in calories than traditional bagels but doesn’t sacrifice the satisfying chew that makes a bagel worth eating in the first place. At 19 ounces per bag, there’s enough for a solid week of quick breakfasts. My oldest has gotten into making his own egg sandwiches before school, which is exactly the kind of independence I want to encourage in a 15-year-old.

Recipe 1: Weekend Power Breakfast Platter

Saturday and Sunday mornings are different in our house. The week is go-go-go, but weekends — especially Sunday before church — are when we actually sit down together and eat a real meal as a family. This weekend I’m toasting up the Kodiak Blueberry Waffles and laying out a full breakfast platter alongside scrambled eggs made with the Farmer’s Cow extra-large eggs and a pile of Brown ‘N Serve sausage patties. Maple syrup on the side, some fresh fruit if we have it, and everyone builds their own plate.

There’s something I genuinely love about those Sunday morning breakfasts. The kitchen smells good, someone’s usually doing something silly at the table, and we’re all in one place before we head out to worship. It doesn’t have to be elaborate to feel like a blessing. A good plate of food shared together is more than enough.

The protein load on this platter is no joke either — between the Kodiak waffles, the eggs, and the sausage, my boys are well fueled for whatever the day brings. After church we’re usually running around outside or heading to some kind of activity, and I’d rather they go out with a full tank.

Recipe 2: Bagel Egg Sandwiches for Busy School Mornings

Weekday mornings are a different beast entirely. My goal is to get everyone fed with something real before the bus comes, without it becoming a production. That’s where the 647 bagels and Brown ‘N Serve patties earn their keep. I slice the bagels, fry up a couple of Farmer’s Cow eggs — I usually do them over-easy or over-medium so the yolk stays a little jammy — and stack a sausage patty right on top. Wrap it in foil and it’s a legitimate breakfast sandwich that rivals anything you’d pay five dollars for at a drive-through window.

My 12-year-old in particular has decided this is his favorite breakfast right now, which is a win I’m not going to argue with. The 647 bagels keep the calorie count reasonable without making the sandwich feel like a compromise. It’s filling, it’s got protein, and it actually tastes good. That’s the trifecta for a school morning breakfast in this house.

A Simple Week, Done Right

This wasn’t a flashy haul. There’s no exotic ingredient, no new superfood trend, and no recipe that requires more than 20 minutes of active cooking. But that’s kind of the point. Feeding a family well doesn’t have to be complicated — it just has to be intentional. I know what my boys need, I know what they’ll actually eat, and I planned accordingly.

That’s the whole philosophy behind this blog, really. Good food, real ingredients, a family gathered around the table. We’re grateful for every meal. I’ll take a simple breakfast platter on a Sunday morning with my four boys over just about anything else.

More recipes coming this week — follow along and let me know in the comments what your family’s go-to quick breakfast looks like. I’m always looking for new ideas to keep things fresh around here.
