Feeding Four Growing Boys: Our Weekly Grocery Haul and What’s Cooking This Week

The Weekly Haul Is In

Every week, I load up the car, head to the store, and come back with what feels like enough food to feed a small army. With four boys between the ages of 6 and 15, that’s not far from the truth. This week’s haul was a good one — practical, filling, and loaded with the kind of ingredients that turn into real meals our whole family actually looks forward to sitting down to eat. Let me walk you through what I grabbed and how I’m planning to put it all to work this week.

Connecticut winters have a way of making everyone hungrier, and when my boys come in from the cold after school, football practice, or just running around the backyard, they need food that satisfies. I always try to balance convenience with quality, and I think this week’s cart reflects that pretty well.

What Came Home From the Store

The protein haul was strong this week. I picked up two trays of ground beef — about 3 pounds total — along with a box of Wellsley Farms 100% Pure Beef Smashed Burger patties, a package of Johnsonville Beddar with Cheddar sausages, thin cut bacon, and a 3-pound bag of Tyson Air Fryer Ready Crispy Wings in Hot ‘N’ Spicy. I also grabbed Bird’s Eye Garlic Shrimp from the freezer aisle, which my boys have been requesting for a few weeks now.

For the freezer staples, I stocked up on two trays of Michael Angelo’s Manicotti with Sauce, a frozen pasta and chicken dish — I believe it was Bertolli — and a box of Murry’s Sausage Egg and Cheese Maple Pancake Sandwiches for those rushed weekday mornings. I also tossed in a box of Hot Pockets Chicken Bacon Ranch High Protein for the older boys when they need a quick lunch between activities.

We went through a lot of snacks and dairy this week, so I picked up four gallons of milk, a 30-count bag of Polly-O String Cheese, and an 18-count box of Blue Bunny Ice Cream Sandwiches. The ice cream sandwiches lasted about 48 hours last time. I have no illusions this time will be any different. I also grabbed a 35-can pack of Coca-Cola, a big box of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, hamburger and hot dog buns, and a bottle of Nashville Hot Chicken seasoning that I’ve been wanting to try for a while.

Recipe Idea #1: Smash Burger Bar Night

One of our favorite family dinner formats is what we call “bar night” — where everyone builds their own plate and customizes it the way they want. This week, I’m planning a full Smash Burger Bar using the Wellsley Farms patties and the ground beef I picked up. The trick with smash burgers is a screaming hot cast iron skillet. You press the patty down hard and fast, let it sear and form that crispy edge, then flip it quick. The flavor difference compared to a regular burger is incredible.

Here’s the move I’m most excited about: instead of regular cheese slices, I’m pulling apart Polly-O String Cheese and laying the strands right on top of the hot patty so they melt down into it. The boys think it looks cool, and honestly, it works better than you’d expect. Serve it all on toasted buns with whatever toppings everyone wants, and you’ve got a dinner that makes six people happy without a single complaint at the table. That’s a blessing in itself.

Smash Burger Bar Night is one of those meals that brings everyone together in the kitchen. Even my youngest wants to help, whether that’s setting out the toppings or just watching the burgers sizzle. Those small moments around the stove are ones I don’t take for granted.

Recipe Idea #2: Nashville Hot Chicken Wing Dinner with Garlic Shrimp

Friday nights in our house are a little more relaxed, and I like to do something that feels a little more special than a weeknight dinner. This week, I’m planning a surf-and-turf style spread using the Tyson Air Fryer Wings and the Bird’s Eye Garlic Shrimp. The wings go into the air fryer according to the package directions, and right when they come out, I’m hitting them with a generous coating of that Nashville Hot Chicken seasoning. I’ve been looking forward to trying this all week.

While the wings are cooking, the garlic shrimp comes together in a skillet in about 10 minutes flat. Serve everything together on a big platter in the middle of the table and let everyone dig in. Add some string cheese on the side for the younger ones, and you’ve got a Friday night feast that feels like a treat but didn’t take all evening to pull off. After a long week, that matters.

The Weeknight Backup Plan

Not every night is going to be a production, and I planned for that too. The Michael Angelo’s Manicotti trays are a lifesaver on busy evenings — quality ingredients, solid portion size, and they heat up while I’m helping with homework. The Bertolli pasta dish gives us another easy option midweek when practice schedules stack up and there just isn’t time to start from scratch. I’m grateful for good freezer staples that don’t feel like settling.

Mornings are handled too. The Murry’s Maple Pancake Sandwiches are something my boys will actually eat before school without a fight, and that’s half the battle some days. Between those and the Frosted Flakes, we’re covered from sunrise to the school bus.

Feeding This Family Is a Team Effort

Every week I stand in that store making decisions about what to feed my family, and I try to do it with intention. Not every item is going to be a superfood, and I’m not pretending it is. But there’s real value in feeding your kids well, sitting down together, and making the kitchen a place where good things happen. We say grace before every meal in this house, and I think there’s something meaningful about pausing to be thankful for a full table. This week, we’ve definitely got that covered.
