December Grocery Haul – The Week We Ate Cereal for Dinner (And Somehow Survived)

Posted on December 11, 2025

Hey friends,

Confession time: We almost never buy cereal in this house. It’s one of those “real food only” hills we’re willing to die on — too much sugar, too little nutrition, and let’s be honest, the boys would live on it if I let them. But this week’s grocery run? We came home with seven different boxes. And the plot twist? We bought them for *dinner*.

Let me explain before you call the food police. After a long week of Tang Soo Do practices, homeschool deadlines, and the kind of mom-brain fog that makes “cereal bar” sound like gourmet, we needed something easy, fun, and zero-prep. So we grabbed a variety pack of flavors (lucky charms, cinnamon toast crunch, the works), and a splash of milk, and called it a “rainbow breakfast for dinner” night. The boys thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. I thought it was grace in a box.

Total haul from Price Chopper: around $53 — not our biggest, but perfectly timed for the post-dojo snack attacks and a little treat-yo’-self. Here’s the spread (photo taken mid-unload because if I waited, the boys would’ve claimed it all):

The “cereal for dinner” haul — don’t judge us

A few highlights that made this run feel like a hug from heaven:

  • Seven boxes of cereal — the rainbow variety pack that turned dinner into a party. (Yes, we know it’s not “healthy,” but sometimes joy trumps steak.)
  • Post-Tang Soo Do snacks — easy granola bars. New flavors!
  • Package of steaks — Nicely marbled Strip Steaks, because even cereal nights need a protein chaser.
  • Yasso Greek yogurt frozen desserts — the “healthy” ice cream alternative that fools no one but satisfies everyone.

As we scooped cereal into bowls tonight, I couldn’t help but chuckle — remembering the manna in Exodus 16, where God provided just what they needed, day by day. Sometimes that’s a brisket haul, sometimes it’s a box of fruity pebbles. Either way, it’s enough. And in this season of hustle, “enough” feels like abundance.

So here’s to the hauls that bend the rules a little, the dinners that bring big smiles, and the God who meets us right where our bowls (and budgets) are.

What’s your family’s “break the rules” dinner? The one that’s not on the meal plan but saves the day? Spill in the comments — I need ideas for next week’s chaos!

With colorful bowls and a colorful life,

P.S. Brisket chili from last week’s haul dropping soon — because steak nights deserve a sequel. 🥣🌈
